Do I need a special kind of primer or paint to paint
my 1977 Corvette stingray also is it cheaper to do a
backyard paint job or get it done professionally

A back yard job will look like poop but will only cost a couple of hundred. I have seen jobs done in a garage that looked almost like a pro did it. A top flight job might run $10,000. If you buy paint from an automobile paint store ask them for recommendations.
