to keep it from flooding?

If you car is flooding you may need to rebuild the carburetor or adjust the choke. What ever you do, don't pump it.

carburetors are all mechanical to mix the air and fuel to that perfect ratio ,press the accelerator once (nice and easy) and see if it fires , then pump it a few times and fire it up , it should just idle , but these things you have to "kick down " to set the idle , then there 's the choke , if you're not wearing a coat it should be wide open ,
