The Grand Cherokee V-8 5.2 Liter you speak of was discontinued in 1998. The Grand Cherokees from 1999-2004 use different engines. The 4.0 six cylinder VIN "S". The 4.7 V-8 VIN "N". And a High Output version of the 4.7 V-8 VIN "J", available from 2002-04 in the Overland. The eighth digit of the VIN designates what engine you have and it's best to stick with the same year too. Even if the 5.2 or 5.9 bolted up, you would still have a computer nightmare making it run. I believe my info is correct but you should consult the supplier of new or rebuilt engines. One supplier even stated that they made improvements in the 4.7 that has premature failures due to owners not changing oil often enough. Most Limited models had the 4.7 engine. I hope this helps.
