What happens if a load on the roof of a car prevents the automatic lift gate from opening?

Question type: General

I have a manual liftgate on my cuurent car. When a boat is on the roof, the
liftgate won't open completely but will remain partially open while I load and
unload items.
If the automatic liftgate can't fully open, does it close again? Does it open as
far as it can and the motor turn off? Does it continue to push against the load
and burn the motor out? Does it repeatedly open and close?

Yes. My car is 12 years old. And I have to acknowledge that it won't last forever. I am starting to do research.
