225k for miles on my 97 chevy prizm and it's just
starting to blow a little blue smoke on cold starts
I'm guessing it's piston rings
Usually it is the valve guides if the oil clears up, but ya, she's worn.
Definitely sounds like worn valve guide seals. When you shut off the engine oil will run down the valve, past the worn seal, and into the combustion chamber. It'll sit there until you start the engine again giving you that one puff of blue smoke on start up. As the seals continue to wear, over time, you'll start to see blue smoke at idle only. HTH. -Jim
Try using 20W-50 oil or STP and you might get more miles out of it. You have nothing to lose.
