If your looking at mileage only VW diesels are right up there on the list.

I'd go with a Hyundai Accent. I've owned 2 anf=d they are great lil rigs

Yes Hyundai's are a sound car. Another one worth looking at is a KIA Spectra. I own one and is a great car as well. I get about 31 mpg hwy with it.
