how are the number of owners calculated?

Car guru reports the number of previous owners.  Does this include the
dealership that now owns the car, or previously owned the car?

Dealers are sellers/resellers, and are not owners. A list of owners should contain only registered owners starting with the person who bought the car new.

I'm not sure but some States do require a Dealer to take title of the vehicle while it's in their inventory. So it's possible that would trigger a change of ownership to some vehicle history report companies. Jim
