The basics are to find a car, test drive it, have a mechanic check it out, check the value on NADA or the Blue Book, make an offer and if the buyer accepts you pay them in exchange for the car, signed title and a bill of sale (plus a smog certificate if applicable) . You then register it and pay the sales tax at your local DMV office. Dealers do all the paper work for you.
