Question type: Car Customization

I have a 1984 k20. I have a 396 with a quadrojet carb. It has
a t400 transmission. I dont know the gearing in the rear.
Very loud strong truck. Highway driving is difficult due to
high rpm at 60mph.. how can I make the truck an everyday
driver and also I have no room when I sit behind the wheel.
I'm 6'2". Any suggestions on how to make it better?

Install a 4 speed OD automatic transmission (700R4) or change the differential gears to something higher (or both).

The way it is you should be getting at least 10 to 12 mpg so you have other issues too.
