1997 Nissan XE PU (manual) won't start

Asked by clydes1961 Jun 13, 2019 at 05:24 PM about the Nissan Truck

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1997 Nissan XE pickup (manual) won't start.  I have replaced the starter (tested
at store) and battery, only getting a clicking (sounds like near the firewall behind
the engine so I'm assuming the starter solenoid).  I swapped the fuel pump and
clutch inhibitor relays with same results.  The truck runs and drives fine if I push
start it.

That single click is a defective solenoid or starter.

Check safety switch on clutch pedal under dash board should be mounted on the cluth pedal.

The clutch switch is like the neutral safety switch in an automatic transmission. If the safety switch is defective, it won't allow the passage of current to the starter/solenoid, so when you try to start the engine, you would hear no sound. As there is a click sound, current is reaching the solenoid, but it isn't engaging the starter motor. This isn't the clutch switch; it's a defective solenoid or a fault in the electrical circuit to it, might be a loose or corroded connection.
