After driving for 10-15 miles, it starts acting crazy...its like the transmition doesnt want to shift and it starts to run rough. why? I live and work on a very steep hill, is this causing the problem

the other day i was driving and out of no where, i went to take off at a red light the transmition would barly go. so i pulled over shut it off. and turned it back on and everything was fine ,til i got to work and went ,to drive up the driveway and i thought it was going to just stop...what is going on?

Sounds like the torque converter in transmission staying locked in. Is the check engine light on?
