Life expectancy of Fuel Injectors

Asked by bobkat May 04, 2013 at 04:36 PM about the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This question is specific to a 2007 SL550, but would probably apply to most any modern car. Assume the car is driven 10k per year in a state that mandates up to 10% Ethanol. Usually name brand of gas is used - but not always. Baring any unforeseen problems, is there a reasonable life expectancy of Fuel Injectors? 50K, 100k, 150k, ?  Is it easy for a mechanic to check the Resistance reading on these.?  Thanks

It is relatively easy to check the resistance but what will that show you? A good injector should read around 12 ohms. A open coil with read a huge number and it will increase as the insulation builds capacitance from the meter power source.

You are right - a good injector shows 12 ohms. The purpose of testing is to check for a failing (yet still functional) injector. The readings in those cases would often be in the 8 to 9 range.
