Did you check that the engine turns over by hand? Put a breaker bar on the crank nut and see if you can turn the engine physically. If it's locked up, you won't be able to turn it by hand. Suggest buying a reman starter and putting it in anyway -- I had a 1981 GMC pickup once that wouldn't crank for me. I dropped the starter out in the parking lot of the place I was stuck at, took it to the auto parts store, and it tested OK, so I had the vehicle towed to the mechanic. Guess what problem was? Starter. It had a bad spot that I must have loosened enough by jostling it, that it worked for the bench test.

Did you also check the fusible links in the wiring to the starter? If these blow out you'll get nothing. Do you physically have voltage to the starter solenoid when the key is turned?
