the engine seemed to be running strong but the lights were getting dimmer. It backfired 3 times very loudly then lost power stalled and would not start again. What might the problem be.

make sure the batt is charged and the terminals are clean and tight , get it to crank and check for spark , if fuel isn't burned in the cylinder it'll explode in the hot exhaust , check all the wiring , have the alt. tested , those ballast resistors are always suspect
