Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My1997 dodge ram won't start. Had it for 8 yrs and never had a problem. Suddenly it
doesn't want to start. I though it was the battery so I got a new one.I t started one time
after new battery and them it didn't start anymore. After getting a new starter still don't
want to start. Checked all possible troubles that I could think of but still no cranking. It
only does a click telling me that the solenoid is activation but not the started itself. Any
ideas? please. Very frutrated. Thanks...

Check your battery cable ends. If old might not be getting as tight as they should. Also check the negative battery connections on the frame and motor.

Also try jump starting it. Put positive to positive cable on your battery and put the negative of jumper cables to your motor. If it then turns over and starts it definitely a connection issue with either your battery or the frame or motor ground.

Have you visually inspected the large positive cable going to the starter? Could be damaged or have frade wire at the cable ends.

Check connections at the starter. Take cables off starter and wire brush the connections and the cables.

Make sure your ignition switch has a good signal when cranking, also check the starter relay in the fuse box under the hood, may have corrosion on the bottom connectors

When I turned the key to start the truck it did nothing. No clicks or nothing. My problem was the wires to the neutral safety switch were cut in rubbed through by the front drive shaft because they were hanging down. What sounds like with your problem is the solenoid might be bad. If you can get someone to help you, check for power at the solenoid, then turn the key to start and check for power on the terminal on the solenoid that goes to the starter, if you have power there you could have a bad wire from the solenoid to the starter. just because the solenoid clicks doesn't always mean its working. Hope this helps. Bob
