how do I remove the crankshaft pulley from a 1982 chevy straight 6

Asked by mjwin57 Jan 22, 2014 at 05:04 PM about the Chevrolet Chevy Van

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1982 chevy box van .... straight line 6 cylinder.
the drive shaft pulley doesn't line up with the other pulleys. I suspect it has been removed
and put on backwards. There is no bolt and there is a place for a key. Do I just use a
puller or?????????/

If you can't see the center bolt, then the bolt is missing or broke off. To remove the crank damper, you need to remove the 3 bolts that hold the pulley to it. You will then need a harmonic balance puller (AKA crank damper puller). You might be able to rent one at an auto parts store. Once it's off, check for a missing or broken key, and damaged crank shaft end. Do not use a standard 2-3 jaw puller, you will damage the balancer.
