If I had a B service conducted on my vehicle why would the shop not inspect the battery?

Question type: General

Before moving out of the state of VA. I took my
350 in for a B service. A couple of days later the
battery was weak, on the second attempt the car
finally started. I had a mechanic check it out to
find out the battery was not holding a charge. How
could this have been missed during the service? It
is included on the things to check right at least
that's what the list says. E-Class 350

If they are working they do not take it out to perform a load test on it, it was working. Since batteries are replaced after failure, few are replaced before failure occurs. A bad cell happens when corrosion reaches the lead plates which leads to a failure, if the corrosion has not reached the lead plates the battery will function as normal, and since batteries are not clear, one cannot see when failure will occur, I will say if it has caps on top, they may have added water to it. Other than that it was working, so it passed without testing farther.

Also, some batteries will literally just drop dead! I once drove home from the shore, about a 90 mile trip. Shut my car off and went in my house. About 15 minutes later I got back in the car to go to the store and the battery was dead. Just like that! No warning at all. In fact I had to lock the door manually because there wasn't enough power to work the power locks! HTH. -Jim
