broken speedo

what makes the speedo in alot of older hondas quit working?

Older Preludes (At least my '89) was a cable driven speedo. The cable went from the back of the speedo to my tranny. My '97 has a speed sensor on the trans housing. I've already had to change once. The cables can get filthy and wear out. This is a junkyard part.
