Asked by Andrew May 17, 2012 at 03:15 PM about the Mercedes-Benz 190-Class

Question type: General

There is a small hose coming from the valve cover going to the air filter and It's spurting oil into the air filter.  What the heck?  Any
ideas?

This hose is a breather hose, you will get a small amount of oil mist collecting in the air filter housing but if you are getting a constant oil flow then your engine is poorly most probably either blocked breather system or worn piston rings allowing too much pressure into the crankcase.

That's Helpful, This car's odometer stopped last year at 209,999 so we don't have any clue what the mileage is now. It's essentially worn out. Would worn piston rings cause a rough idle?

It all depends on the amount of 'escape' if the rings are worn you will be losing your compression and therefore power. As good and reliable as Mercedes were, 200k plus miles is alot for this engine wear and tear has taken it's toll I fear. Should you strip and overhaul the engine I would also recommend you replace the Timing chain and guides as this should be done every 100,000 and will almost definately be streched.

Hey not sure if this is still monitored but I have a 190e 2.6 the main hose that runs from the air filter to the valve cover, there is a very small secondary hose that splits off and runs below the filter housing. My has become brittle and broken, any idea what it is and if it's important?
