My 1999 Mits. montero was in 4 wheel drive started roaring then there was a loud pop and a hissing noise. What happened? Do u put in 4 wheel drive when vehicle is in park or drive?

its preferred that you put it in neutral position or park but the sound is not good i think that he gears are not synchronized
