Truck sputters when under strain

I have an '83 Nissan pickup that runs smooth when
idling, however, when I have to give it gas to climb
a hill it spits and sputteres. My first thought was
carberator but I was told the carberator was fine.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Ed. I replaced the fuel pump and filter recently but this certainly helps. Much appreciated.
