check engine light and battery light are on and idon't have a scanner. Is there any other way to get the codes and reset them without the computer scanner or taking it to a mechanic?

It's possible to get the codes by turning the ignition ON-OFF-ON-OFF and ON (not start) within 5 seconds. If done correctly a message, followed by whatever codes are being being stored in the computer, then "done" will show up on the odometer. The meaning for these codes can be found on google, so write them down. If it's a first gen ('95-'99) the check engine light will flash in a sequence.
