out of state plates
I am trying to sell my Land Rover through your site - I (and the car) am in Palm Springs CA but my car is plated in Oregon as that is were we live most of the year. In Oregon you keep your plates when you sell a car and in CA the plates go with the car. How should the buyer drive the car home without plates? Is this a problem?
Obviously, you want to keep the plates. 1. Sell the car and let the buyer decide what he wants to do. He can answer to a police officer when stopped with the bill of sale & title. Or if he prefers, add a sign to the back saying, "Just purchased; No plates." He could also use plates from another car and probably would never have a problem with this. 2. Allow him to keep the plates, with a deposit that would keep you happy, and when he registers and gets new plates, return the plates to you.
Check with the California DMV to know how they want you to handle it. If your LR is 49 state smog compliant it cannot be registered in the land of fruits and nuts.
