Can having the wrong year distributor cap cause a GMC Jimmy not to start?

I have a 1993 GMC Jimmy with a 1996 or 1997 engine, I asked the guy I bought it
from and he said that he couldn't remember what year the engine actually was. I am
leaning towards a 1997. Anyways, a few months ago I was riding down the road and
my truck started spitting and sputtering, it was kind of like a jerking motion.
Eventually it cut out completely, I waited a few minutes and tried to crank it back up,
it cranked and I made it about 1/4 a mile before it cut out again. I managed to do this
over and over until I could get it to my house. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter,
distributor cap, coil pack, secondary coil pack, air filter, both ignition relays, the fuel
harness has been rewired, and the O2 sensor... Then I found out that the engine was
a 97 not a 93. Could these parts being the wrong year cause my truck not to start. It
will crank it just won't turn over. Please any help will be greatly appreciated, I have
been dealing with this truck since December of 2014 and it still isn't fixed. And I really
don't want to get rid of it.

93 and 97 4.3 engines were very different. They don't really interchange. The biggest thing is the heads and intake. Your 93 harness will only plug into a 93 distributor. Both distributors can be put into each motor but the wiring and ecu are different
