Question type: Maintenance & Repair

What is the Electronic Throttle Control and what is
it's purpose? The ETC light came on. Also the
malfunction indicator light came on.

In the old days there was a cable that went from the accelerator pedal to the throttle body or carburetor. Now you have an accelerator pedal position sensor. When you step on the accelerator pedal a signal is sent to the PCM (computer). The PCM uses a small electric motor to open or close the throttle based on the signal from the accelerator pedal position sensor. Most likely the PCM is getting a skewed signal from the accelerator pedal position sensor. That's why both lights are on. Best to have it looked at. HTH. - Jim
