I have a 77 911S and cannot locate the heater / defroster control cables in the engine compartment.  Any ideas where to look?

The cables run back to boxes that open with flaps. They are near your heat exchangers. Get a Bentley manual, or I can give a PDF to you that has the diagram.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/tom_sharpes/heater_box1.htm This may help you abit...

pull the rear wheels off and you will see a lot clearer as to how this poorly designed system works ,the cables often seize and snap off at the handle inside the cabin ,to replace the cables is your worst nightmare ,ps it only gives heat while you are driving ,there is a fan on the motor that is supposed to turn on but these very rarely work ,i have rewired the fan to a switch near the heater controls on the dash so the heat is on when the car is stationary

i just rebuilt these things on my1972 911. very easy to do, a cable runs from the lever by the handbrake through the transmission tunnel to a pair of soup can things under the rear seats beneath the car. these have a large tube that connects to the heat exchangers beneath the engine. As long as the cable still operates the valves in those soup cans, you should get heat.
