Car won't start

Asked by Byron Jun 04, 2018 at 08:24 PM about the 2007 Hyundai Accent

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Sometimes my car won't turn over. It'll start fine
and I'll drive it somewhere. Go to leave and it won't
turn over. I'll wait 1 to 5 min and it'll crank fine.
Took it to 2 mechanics they were stumped. One of
them couldn't get it to fail at all. Took it to the
dealership and it failed on them. They changed the
ignition cylinder and the clutch switch. I went and
picked it up and it started fine. Got it home killed it
and went to restart it and nothing. I can drive it
somewhere park it and 9hrs later go to leave and
nothing. It acts like the clutch is pressed. Full
power but no turnover. New battery. New
connectors. New ignition cylinder. New clutch
switch. I have no idea.

I meant it acts like the clutch isn't pressed in.

Maybe. The dealership kinda balked when I suggested that. It's like as soon as I get gar enough from home that I don't want to walk it acts up. One mechanic suggested a dead spot on the starter but I'll literally do nothing and it'll start. Or it won't start and I'll switch gears (manual) and then it will. Or it won't and I'll engage and disengage the ebrake then it will. I've not been able to establish any kind of pattern.

My car, an automatic, does exactly the same thing. For months it works and fires immediately, then twice in two days, I try and start and nothing happens. Ten minutes later it starts immediately. Hyundai seem to not have a clue what causes this.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to state that I have a similar experience and to ask a question. 2012 Hyundai Accent, automatic. Occasionally I will turn the key, the dash lights come on and dim, but not sound, no turning over, nothing. Four months ago, happened once. Two months ago, happened once. Now 4 times in the past six weeks. The first three times, I tried again and it immediately turned over. The last couple of times it took 15-20 attempts. This very last time, tried 16 times. Opened the hood, let it drop and it started. (was thinking like back in the day when you needed to tap on the starter sometimes and it would go). So the question, if anyone is still listening: Do / did your dash ligths come on and dim when you had a failed starting attempt?

I have the same problem with my 2012 Accent. New starter, new battery. The dash lights come on. It turns. There are sounds. But it does not catch. I did notice that the problem only happens after it has rained. One mechanic said to give some gas and wait a bit. That Usually helps, but I’m afraid to flood the engine.

Well shoot, I have a 2010 Hyundai Accent and I'm experiencing the same problem. First it would only not start occasionally, every few months, now it won't start almost everytime I turn the key unless I'm getting it jumped then it runs fine. I just changed the battery but it still won't start now. kdaugherty2012 had a suggestion so I'll go try that. Anyone else come up with solutions to their problems?

My 2012 Hyundai Accent has been doing this for years. I even took it to the dealership when it was still under warranty and they could not figure it out. Recently, I met a man who used to work at Hyundai and he said to check if the little key symbol on the left side of the dash turns on when it won't start. I checked and it does not. But if I am turning my key and I notice the light DOES come on, my car starts every single time! SO TRY CHECKING THAT! I still have to take it to get it fixed but I think I have 100% figured that out with his help.
