Question type: General

I was just given a 1971 Pontiac Le Mans but I dont know if this is a sport or not or if it is a GTO Clone. How do I tell the difference between them? The hood has vents in it and it has vents behind the front fender wells. The front end does not go straight across ( the nose of it goes out like the GTO does) but there area no decals to go by. If you can help please let me know.

Sounds like the basic Le Mans sport. These had the hood vents and front fender well vents as well as the pointy nose. If it was a GTO clone it would be an aftermarket job.

The GTO front bumper you describe was available as an option on the Lemans Sport. I suspect that is what you have if there are no other indications it is a GTO. If the engine / carb set up is a 350 with a 2 BBL it its the Sport since I don't think that combination was available on a GTO.

I have a similar question, but the VIN will not tell you if the car is a Sport of base Le Mans. The Sport and GTO are basically the same car, and the engine options specified on the VIN could be the same. The only real way to know for sure is the factory build sheet or a window sticker specifically for the car, or PHS documentation.
