why does the steering wheel lock up and multiple lights come on my car while driving down the road?

while driving down the road, the steering wheel locked up followed by the battery light, oil light and engine light coming on. the car never knocked off but simply would not move. after I turned the car off, it wouldn't start back for about 20 minutes. any ideas? once it did start again , it ran fine all the way home.

Your car turned off but since the key was in the on position all the lights on the dash remained lit.
