Getting White smoke when gunning the engine

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Getting white smoke but ONLY when I gun the engine, the coolant appears
okay but the oil is very low.  Obviously I have an oil leak but where are the
possibilities considering the smoke only comes when engine is gunned and
only lasts a few seconds.

I would clean or replace the PCV and see if that helps. Did you top off the engine oil?

I put one quarter in as that is all I had and it needs more. I will replace the PVC and add more oil. Thanks you.

White smoke is usually a sign of blown headgasket or cracked cylinder head, plus these engines are very finicky about oil levels, they must be kept full at all times and serviced regularly or they will fail. Now I have seen a few cause where an engine had broke some rings and would blow white smoke due to excessive oil in the combustion chambers but those engines didn't run very long after that started showing. If you do what was suggested above and still have the problem, then check for blown headgasket, if that tests good then your need a cylinder leak down test too see if it is actually rings or block damage.

Tennisshoes thank you but if I had a blown gasket or a cylinder leak or block damage wouldn't I see the white smoke a little more consistently? I had it happen like twice and only when I stomped on it, then huge smoke and gone in seconds.

Maybe your engine is just worn and oil accumulates in the combustion chamber. When you gun it you blow out all the build up in the engine and exhaust system.

Yes if it was a headgasket one would think it would be more consistent but if it is in the very early stages you may only see it when it reaches a certain saturation point like a high revving engine, I'm still leaning more towards an internal engine problem.

Smell of it. Does it linger around or disappear?

Does it have a misfire?

Pull spark plugs, use a picture chart to see how you motor is running.

There is no lingering smell and it doesn't misfire, I haven't pulled the spark plugs yet but I did replace the PCV Valve. Again it seems to be running well, but then my wife rarely if ever guns the engine for any reason. The situation has not repeated itself yet.

Keep an eye on the coolant levels and the condition and level of the engine oil, if you notice any unusual drop or change in color then it will be time to do something about it. Oil consumption should not exceed a quart in 500 miles, and the engine should not use or loose any coolant.

I will thank you, luckily we recently purchase it from a decent used car lot and they are having me take it to a mechanic as their expense.

Well these are a big air pump and condensation may have been in it from humidity, a good rev at times does not hurt, blow out the gunk. Not too or past the red line. Oh, the recently used purchase, have your mechanic look at it too see if it also recently had a head or intake gasket installed. That may be why there was some white smoke. Cat may be blowing out some of its build up.
