Getting White smoke when gunning the engine

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Getting white smoke but ONLY when I gun the engine, the coolant appears
okay but the oil is very low.  Obviously I have an oil leak but where are the
possibilities considering the smoke only comes when engine is gunned and
only lasts a few seconds.

I would clean or replace the PCV and see if that helps. Did you top off the engine oil?

I put one quarter in as that is all I had and it needs more. I will replace the PVC and add more oil. Thanks you.

Tennisshoes thank you but if I had a blown gasket or a cylinder leak or block damage wouldn't I see the white smoke a little more consistently? I had it happen like twice and only when I stomped on it, then huge smoke and gone in seconds.

Maybe your engine is just worn and oil accumulates in the combustion chamber. When you gun it you blow out all the build up in the engine and exhaust system.

Pull spark plugs, use a picture chart to see how you motor is running.

There is no lingering smell and it doesn't misfire, I haven't pulled the spark plugs yet but I did replace the PCV Valve. Again it seems to be running well, but then my wife rarely if ever guns the engine for any reason. The situation has not repeated itself yet.

I will thank you, luckily we recently purchase it from a decent used car lot and they are having me take it to a mechanic as their expense.

Well these are a big air pump and condensation may have been in it from humidity, a good rev at times does not hurt, blow out the gunk. Not too or past the red line. Oh, the recently used purchase, have your mechanic look at it too see if it also recently had a head or intake gasket installed. That may be why there was some white smoke. Cat may be blowing out some of its build up.

I have a 2013 Elantra that does the same thing. If you stomp on it, it leaves a white cloud like a James Bond movie, then drives normally again. I'm trading car in this week. Sorry no help.

Hi ATAKFC, I too facing the same issue with car smoking when ever gun engine. No oil leaks, smooth engine running. Mechanic tried with changing PCv and some cleaning . It didn't workout. Pls suggest me what you did for your car to solve issue.

If your engine is of Hi- milage and of questionable service history, I'd turn my attention to the Valve guide seals. If they have dried up due to extreme overheating, in the frequent oil changes and possible harsh engine additives that has caused damage to the elasticity of the rubber they may be allowing oil to seep down the valve stems into the combustion chamber. This is noticeable by initial start in the morning puff of white smoke and sometimes if you leave the engine idling for 5 or 10 minutes and then rev up the engine you lay down a smokescreen so that an invasion can hit Normandy like a PT boat in extream conditions... " Like the one I just bought it auction" on the plus side my neighborhood is free of mosquitoes.
