what is the part that shorts out when you spill liquid onto the shifter on a 2000 e320?

The gear position indicator(a fancy name for the shifter assy.) is very easy to damage,car will not show target gear,goes into limp mode home.You end up buying whole assy. in one piece.Thats about the worst(not much under there
