I had a 2004 SL55 that did the same thing. Mine was the hydraulic motor had gone bad and nothing I had done wrong. I found an independent authorized Mercedes repair shop to repair it and it saved me over $1,000 on the bill. Another thing it could be is the sleeves for the flaps, that fold while the top is in motion, could have problems with the cables. I had to also have those repaired later on...again they went bad just because of age. Good luck!

I have 98 porsche boxster. My car had the same problem. It was the cable to the motor it came off. I don't know if this will help you but that's what was my problem. I found info from my car club forum boxster.
