Key stuck in ignition

wiggle the key around till it comes back. your going to need a new key cyclinder.

I am having the same problem with my Polo GTi

If this happens, it's usually the lock pin that is stuck. You can shake it loose by releasing steering column tilt lever and yanking/banging whole steering column up and down a few times.

Volkswagen cars seem to have this problem with the key getting stuck in the ignition and yet there's No Recall Why?

Just had my key stuck in the ignition. I tried the tips but had to disconnect battery and take out chip to shut down car.

I have a 2012 Jetta and my key is stuck in the ignition . This is very upsetting. Can anyone tell me the cause of this problem?

Answer to question: if we stop buying Volkswagen then maybe they will fix the problem!!! Sounds like a plan to me.

2018 Jetta same issue key stuck in ignition

It has to do when you turn off the car. If it’s automatic transmission, press the button to change gears all the way forward to park. Then the key will come out!

I had the same issue with my 2015 jetta and couldn't get the key out nor switch of the engine. I was desperate and went to the closest car shop I could find (no VW dealer). They tried everything and in the end I had to get a new ignition for $700. The part was not available anywhere (obviously because it is such a faulty part) so I was without vehicle for 2 weeks until the shop finally received the new part. 4 months later I get a recall letter from VW acknowledging the matter and offering extended warranty. Now they got back to me telling me that I should have brought the car to a VW dealer to get it fixed to get reimbursed. I said I searched the internet up and down when this happened but there was no recall on this issue and so I stayed with the shop my car was already at and not switching to a pricey VW dealer to get this fixed. I grew up in Germany and back in the days German cars were build with quality. VW were the most bought cars because of their reliability. But I can tell that this has changed. Besides this issue I received two more letters from VW regarding qualities issues in my vehicle that would need to get fixed. This is embarrassing for a company like VW that had such a great reputation. They make customers pay twice - paying for the vehicle and then for all the repairs due to their poor quality. I will get rid of this car as soon as I can and will never go back. What a shame!

I’m having the same problem and I also spent hundreds of dollars because if it, but I still have the problem. I haven’t received a recall notice about that issue though. It would be so helpful if you could post a picture of that recall notice, please! Hopefully, I can get VW to fix it...

There is a recall under 100,000 miles on this issue

There is a possible solution depending on how severe the sticking is without replacing a lock cylinder. First off, if you key is stuck inside the ignition you have to remove steering column trim pieces. Take a small hammer and tap the cylinder in various places near the key while trying to turn it off. It should eventually release the key. Once it's out , clean the groves in the key with a toothbrush or something. I would also recommend using compressed air to blow inside the keyhole if you can. Then you'll need to get some Extra Fine Graphite powder. You can buy it in a tube, or you can take a pencil and grind up graphite from it. Next apply the graphite inside the keyhole. Use the key to push it in back and forth, just dont turn it yet. Blow some can air or air compressor nozzle to blow graphite around and clean the excess. Keep putting the key in and out and applying more graphite until you feel it sliding softly. Then try turning the key just a bit but not all the way to ignition ON. Apply more graphite. Then try turning it all the way and see if the cylinder assembly rotates without sticking. Try to keep the groves clean on your key. That's how the dirt gets it that causes sticking. Hope this helps.

You forgot the last step Adam -- order a new cylinder because yours is on your way out. I milked another year out of mine by lubing and wiggling, but it finally left me stranded...it will happen at the worst possible time, trust me. Also, easiest way to get one out if unstuck is to unlock steering wheel tilt and slam it up and down. That will bump around the release pin enough to let it pop out.

I had the problem and it was fixed free by VW , because they extended the warranty in the ignition .

I would like to see a class action against V.W. Since they will not recall for this ignition issue they have and call it “normal maintenance” mine cost $900 to repair and they have lost a repeat customer.

We now have the issue on a 2012 Jetta. I heard there is a recall and it’s covered if the car is under 100k miles but we are at 140k. Anyone have any luck getting it covered after 100k miles?

I just had to put my car in the shop today, for the same problem. Its costing me 1400 bucks to fix by it and it’s a (VW) dealer. I don’t understand why there isn’t a recall and no matter what mileage your at it should be covered. It’s a huge safety and liability risk. I’m a single mom I don’t have extra cash to fix a problem that’s seems contusion with there vehicles. How do you get a class action lawsuit because I’m all in to start one.

VW extended the warranty for the steering column lock housing for certain 2014 & 2015 model

Just make sure you have an extra key. All that wiggling and pulling to get the key to work eventually broke it off in the ignition.

that what happened to mine! It broke off in the ignition and I DON'T have an extra key.

Let me start by saying F German engineering! My key got stuck in my running 07 Jetta automatic for 2.5hrs before I could even get the key out. I had this happen when a USB cable dropped into the track of the gear shift, so even when I thought I had pushed all the way forward into park, it had actually wedged against the USB instead. Silly but a cheap thing to check!

I just called VW to see if the recall covers my 2013 Jetta. They said it covers 2014 and 2015 ones but not mine. How wonderful.
