Hi, I am an international student and one of my friend who is going back to her country is giving me her used car. She lives in Boston and I live in Rhode Island. In order to register this car as mine, what kind of procedures and documents are needed? I am really curious please help!

I can tell you California but somebody from that area should correct me if it's different. You need the Title to the car, with her signature on it, a certificate of emissions (passing test) a bill of sale stating price, (Here they charge tax. RI and Mass. idk if they do or not)... your drivers license, proof of insurance and the license plates so they can issue new ones for RI. And $25 fee.

Do I still need to get the bill of stating price even if I receive it as a gift?

Do what Jim suggested. Without it in Calif. they charge the market value of car sales tax 7.25% but immediate family exempted
