Transmission light comes on intermittently in '04 Jag x-type

Recently the transmission light has been showing up in my car.  When that happens, I
cannot shift, accelerate, etc.  If I shut the car down for a few minutes, it seems to reset
and is completely drive-able again.  It may not happen again for  a few days.  We have
it in at a shop right now where they at first could not duplicate the problem.  The owner
drove it home to see if it would happen to him.  We are now told we need a new
transmission and trans body - whatever that is.  Somehow this feels like overkill.  Are
my gut instincts wrong?
