Oil usage has increased

Asked by roadcaptain Jul 10, 2010 at 05:53 AM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased my 2003 Dodge 1500 4 years ago with 19,000 miles on it. It was using about 1 quart of oil every 7000 miles. No problem. Today, the 5.7 Hemi is using 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles and our driving habits are unchanged. No smoke from the pipes, any ideas?

Thanks

check all your gaskets make sure there is no seepage.. check the oil cooler if your truck has one... just because there is no smoke doesn't mean it's not burning oil, if you can't find any oil leaks check your spark plugs (all 16 of them) to check for oil fouling, hope that there isn't because if there is it's probably a bad valve seal

the rings could be gettin bad. ive seen some engines that wont smoke till its just dumping oil on the pistons. if thats the case ur gonna have to have your engine bored over and get new pistons as well

as it seems you are seeing no smoke id be more concerned with a pcv valve or internaly cracked intake on your hemi before i would go blaming the rings mopar tech Brad
