Rearend Gear Ratio

Asked by GuruVJYCV Sep 22, 2018 at 04:59 PM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 2006 Dodge Mega Cab 1500 with the 5.7L
Hemi. I need more torque and power for pulling. I’m
looking into installing a 4:10 rear and getting it
chipped. My thinking is that this set up would give
me the ability to dial down the power/torque when
not pulling. Any feed back or additional information
is appreciated.

Skip the chip. A lower gear ratio will help. What ratio do you have now?

Right now I have a 3:73 rearend in it. I’m pulling a 28 foot trailer that weighs about 6,000 pounds loaded. I’d like to have more lugging power going up steep inclines, where we live is pretty mountainous, lots of hill climbing.

What’s the story with the chips? How much more power do you actually get out of one? What would be the approximate mileage with a 4:10?

9,540

373 I thought they just put those in taxi cabs, just jokin you're on the right track

Mileage is a loaded question take into consideration, what's your mileage now. How much weight will you pull, what kind of terrain as in when I used to walk to school uphill both ways, chips always give me problems trying to explain a chip is like a cam where do you want the power it you put it on the bottom you have to take it from the top does that make sense to you?
