2006 and up Dodge Rams (and other Dodge vehicles) use MDS for fuel savings. MDS is a multi-displacement system that shuts some cylinders down at light throttle or light engine load. This saves fuel, but makes the engines sound similar to a 4 cylinder when in this mode. When MDS is functioning on my 2014 Ram 5.7 "ECO" is displayed at the top of the driver information display. Turning on "trailer towing" disables the MDS. See the link for more information or "google" Ram MDS......https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-Displacement_System
