I have a 2000 Buick contour , the add coolant light stats on, there's coolant in radiator, someone said it could be sensor? Now how do I know if it could be thermostate or sensor?

When I drive my car and turn on my
heat, the temp gauge goes up to near
red, but when I shut it off gauge goes
back down?

Check to see if the radiator fans work with the a/c on. If they don't, replace the temperature sensor. Also replace the coolant level sensor.
