How do I open the tailgate after the latch breaks off?

1990 F-150.  The latch for the tail gate broke off.  How do I open (repair) the gate?

That made me laugh - out loud.... Then I just reread it and laughed again. At least your pain brought me joy. Maybe because it didn't happen to me for once. ---- Try hooking the mechanism or taking the inside panel off to release the latches.

On m my 97 on the left hand side after the handle breaks off drill a hole through the pieces left sticking out and you can get a key ring or something to use as a temporary handle and just pull out and up on it and it'll open back up
