Transmission shifting

I have a 97 Ford f150 that has started shifting in
and out of overdrive real hard. It seems to be
worse at 55 and not as bad 60 and above.  Full of
fluid. Is there are anything I can do, other than a
rebuild?

I’ve had this issue twice with my 2006 F150. It’s a simple cylinder misfire that the computer detects after shifting to overdrive. When this occurs the computer hesitates and pulls it out of overdrive. It’s a hard shift and make you think it will cause damage. If you accelerate it shifts fine but cruising at around 80km per hour where the overdrive would normally shift is where the problem occurs. Turn off the overdrive and cruise at that speed no problem. A tuneup will fix your problem. New plugs and possibly coils. Good luck. Garry Stewart
