Question type: General

I have a 1987 F-150 XLT Lariat with the 4.9L L6 and 2.37 rear end. Is it even possible to tow anything around 5000lbs with a frame hitch?

even the 4.2 V8's tow over 5K with a true tow package. i know that's different from the straight 6's, but that motor has a very good reputation for towing. you may need to reinforce the rear suspension tho. good luck

The best answer is take your vin number to a local ford dealership. They can plug it into their computer and determine exactly what equipment the truck was built with. (assuming nothing has been changed out) . They have an associated chart outlining all the maximums for the vehicle. Go to the parts department, there will probably be no charge.
