For one count the spark plug wires. Then you'll know if you have a six or eight cylinder. You can also give the vin number to the Ford dealer or even a parts store and they can tell you.
that would work as long as the engine is original that truck that old it may have been swapped out for something else. Should be a OEM tag on the rad saddle with fan belt information ect.. that will also tell you what engine the truck was built with again assuming the rad saddle has not been changed out. If it has 8 spark plugs more than likely its a 302 they were very common for the 80's.
Easiest way pull spark plug out get piston to top tdc, stick a bit of wire in bore. Mark it then turn engine to bottom bdc then mark. Measure between the two marks 3" is a 302 3.5" is a 351... or if a Windsor will be casted on heads!
