I have an 86 ford escort its only running on two cylinders, new spark plugs don't know the other two cylinders aren't hitting

A compression test is definitely in order. The 1.9L has a track record of either dropping valve seats and destroying cylinders or simply blowing head gaskets. Coil packs fail as well but still - start with the basics before you spend any real money on this car.
