Help, it is time to replace the timing belt on my 2001 Highlander and everybody is telling me that I have to get different things done with that.  What do I need to have done as well, the water pump?  tensions belts? seals?  etc...

Hello, I just purchased an 01 highlander 4 cylinder and I work at a toyota dealership so i work on these vehicles everyday. The 4 cylinders do not have timing belts only the v6 does. The main things that go bad on the 2.4l engines are the timing chain tensioners- leak oil, also the water pump- leak coolant (check your overflow bottle if it is low your water pump may have went bad. Another was to determine if the water went bad is to look at the hood protector (located under the hood on the engine side) this cover usually shows coolant spray on it, which verifies that the water pump has went bad. Other than them two problems i wouldnt worry about anything esle. As long as your maintain it like regular oil changes every 5,000 miles and changing your coolant every 30,000 also with your transmission fluid. Just by doing regular maintenance like this your vehicle will run forever. Oh and also change your spark plugs at 90,000 (that is when toyota recommends them to be changed). I hope this helped you!
