replacing anEJ255 with an EJ20Y in a 2005 Outback

Asked by GuruBGTHW Jan 28, 2019 at 11:19 PM about the 2005 Subaru Outback

Question type: General

My wife is looking at a 2005 Outback.  The current owner says he switched the original engine (an EJ255 with an EJ 20Y).  What are the (if any) problems that may associated with this pertaining to performance, drivability, maintenance etc?

1 Answer

Most likely the car is a cobbled together piece of junk that has been raced and abused. If smog checks are an issue I have doubts it would pass.
