my mechanic says I need a new driveshaft for my 2006 torrent or he can turn the 4 wheel drive into a 2 wheel drive is that advisable as driveshafts are very expensive

Drive shafts are not that expensive. You will de-value your car a lot by turning it into 2WD. What was the quote? Did you check salvage yards for a used driveshaft?
