2001 Galant, lost cabin power (radio, locks, dome lights) and rough idle

Asked by Steve_A67 May 28, 2018 at 08:03 PM about the 2001 Mitsubishi Galant

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

power windows work, but cabin stuff does not; power locks work with key on,
but not with key off; I saw a thread with the same/similar question, but pointed
to fuses 22/23 in engine; the fuse block in my engine doesn't have a fuse
numbered that high

i thought maybe this might be a semi-common problem for a Galant (the same thing happened to my 2000), and maybe it's a relay or ??

This thread offered some insight, but no closure... https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion-t8135_ds609786

Steve_A67 did you resolve the problem? I have a 2001 and now I have this problem. What I can do?

The problem was a short in the dome light switch. This blows fuse 1 or 2 (I forget) in the fuse box under the hood, near the battery. On my 2001, these fuses are encased in a yellow plastic thing that keeps them in a pair. I couldn't find an exact replacement, so I just put two 10amp fuses in slots 1 and 2. But, you need to fix the short in the dome light switch first. This dome light is near the windshield and you can pop out the entire assembly to inspect the inside. The bulbs are not robust, so handle carefully. I think there was a quick-connect (it's been awhile since I fixed this), that you can squeeze, and remove the entire light unit. Get this to a counter with some good lighting, and maybe a magnifying glass. There is some flat metal that runs parallel and perpendicular to the switch area. I found that one of the plastic "dots" that holds down the metal wasn't holding it down anymore, so it was hitting another piece of metal causing a short. I wedged something in this area to hold down the piece of metal, and put a healthy dab of super glue over the plastic dot. Once dried, I tested the switch in all 3 positions, to be sure everything was secure. Then put the two 10amp fuses in. Then, after attaching the quick-connect wire, I installed the light assembly back into the inner roof of the car. And, everything worked!

Ok thanks I will check. But the weird thing is, the car don’t have any blow out fuse, all relays are working good too.
