1979 dodge power wagon

i got a 1979 dodge power wagon 150 has a 318 with a mopra purple
cam 3 weeks ago it started back firing through the carb so i drove it
under the carport killed it then about a hour later i started it back up an
it back fired so i killed long story short i put diff carb on fired up for
maybe 30 sec an dead i thought it jumped time so tore it down to timing
chain everything was fine put new coil cleaned plugs put old carb back
on today it busted off then dead so i cleaned points checked the cap
pulled plug wires an put back an it spins over but still want start need
help my other truck needs motor so was banking on driving this one for
a lil bit cant be much wrong cuz it was running fine

my guess would be that the timing is off, it doesn't need to jump time to backfire thru the carb. if it backfiring thru the carb then back off the timing advance. Example if time is 6 degrees before TDC adjust it back down to 5 then 4 and so on until the backfiring stops, if it worsens go the other way until it stops. if i read you post right, you put in a cam shaft? A new cam will cause timing issues during break in, if not properly tuned valve damage can happen. I'm just a back yard mechanic so it sounds to me like you need someone with a bit more exp than me but If it were mine though i would 1 start it and let it idle 2 loosen distributor and adjust timing back until back fire stops (or forward if need be) 3 let it run in idle for about an 30 to 45 mins paying attn to engine sounds 4 give a couple revs and listen for backfire and adjust time as needed. 5 check and see if you've adjusted time too far by checking exhaust, if the exhaust sucks your hand up to the tail pipe (even for just a brief second) then adjust time back forward a bit and re-check. You should feel a constant pushing from exhaust pipe, no drawing in of air Once you've resolved those issues lock the distributor back down and take it a for very light test drive and listen to engine sounds. If backfiring continues repeat the process depending where the backfire comes from, Carburetor (back off) tail pipe (advance).
