03 Mazda tribute runs horrible, mechanic says its the front two catalytic converters and said the whole thing will cost near $1,200 (just for the two cats on the exhaust headers)  im trying not to spend that kind of money right now on this car. driving it home it blew a hole in my EGR valve. (back fire?) is there a cheaper option like rodding out the cats on the header and hoping the 3rd main cat will get me past DEQ? has anyone ever done this?

First will say,thoughts of rodding out cat,s is ilegal,but can be done and car will run,this will all so reck havoc on your ECM,which will lead to poor fuel economey,and possible damage to your engine from over load of fuel dumping,don,t you just hate Car computers,but that is what you are up against,you will save in the long run ,if car is worth the repair just in fuel,,,good luck with it.

Try Rockauto. I have replaced my Camry cat twice with their replacement part. Bolts right up, and it's a fraction of the factory part. If you live in a southern or desert state, you may luck out at a salvage yard. I doubt it though. I think the yards are instantly cutting them off and selling them for the precious metal values. I noticed that when I was in a Nevada salvage yard that every cat was cut off.
